Search is answering the question now. Here's how you still get the click.
AI summaries sit on top of more and more search results. The playbook didn't die. It shifted toward being the source the answer is built from.
Search a question today and there's a good chance an AI-written summary greets you before any links. For businesses that lived on organic traffic, that's unnerving. Fewer people need to click to get a basic answer.
But look at what those summaries are built from: web pages. Somebody's content is being quoted. The question is whether it's yours.
What still works, and works better
Be specific. Generic "10 tips" posts are exactly what AI summaries replace. Pages with real numbers, local details, pricing ranges and first-hand experience are what they cite.
Answer the follow-up question. The summary covers the basics. The person who clicks wants the next layer down: how much does it cost in my area, how long does it take, what can go wrong. Write that page.
Own your local footprint. For service businesses, the map pack, reviews and your Google Business Profile still drive phone calls. Keep hours, photos and services current, and answer every review.
Structure your pages. Clear headings, FAQ sections and schema markup make it easy for search engines (and the AI on top of them) to understand what you offer.
Build things people come back to. Tools, calculators, guides and newsletters create direct relationships that don't depend on any algorithm.
The answer is built from somebody's page. Make sure it's yours.
The bigger shift
Rankings were always a means to an end. The end is a direct line to your customer: an email list, a booked call, a follower who actually sees your posts. The businesses that win the next few years will use search to start relationships, then own them.
